In C.S. Lewis’ classic novel, the hero lands on Perelandra  – a virgin planet at the beginning of it’s creation.  It is flourishing and innocent, and its “lands” consists of floating mats of vegetation upon a green sea beneath the dome of a golden sky.  There he encounters only one other person… and slowly comes to realize she is the Eve of that world.

What would a wine from Perelandra taste like? We have tried to capture it in this this innocent, elegant, subtle Cabernet!  Below you can explore all the tastes and fragrances others have found waiting in Perelandra!

SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR TASTING PARTY

  1. Like planet Perelandra, this wine is young.  If possible, decant it for 2 hours before drinking (using an aerator helps).   If you are new to all this, instead of decanting, just slowly pour the wine into your glasses and wait 1 hour before drinking.  This allows the wine to “open up” and it will smell and taste even better!
  2. Like planet Perelandra, this wine is subtle.  Find the biggest wine glass you can to capture its delicate aromas
  3.  Swirl the wine, then begin with the Nose –
    • hold your nose at the very tip of the edge of the glass and then tilt the glass so you will be smelling it’s inside surface.  Breath in  very slowly and deeply. Like the islands of Perelandra, do you smell subtle flowers and spice – especially violets, cinnamon, vanilla ?  OK do it again – think juicy fruit gum (if you are old enough)!
    • Now hold the glass straight so your nose is out over the wine.  Breath in again.  Do you smell subtle Cranberry Sauce or Cream ?
Look at what others have discovered in the TRAIL GUIDE below.
  4. Taste Planet Perelandra.  Do it in several really small slow swallows.  What flavors do you sense ? Honey Dew and Pomegranate ?  Try again and look for tangerine in the middle of the taste.   Look at what others have discovered in the TRAIL GUIDE below. The wine begins shy and understated especially in the nose. Over a span of about an hour you will notice it open up and unfold, becoming both more detailed, less tart, and more welcoming.
  5.  Drinking it is truly a journey of discovery over time. Like the bubble tree fruit of Perelandara, this wine is so delightful, so easy to drink, you may be tempted to go back for more! Psalm 104:15 says “wine gladdens the heart.” Take a moment to give thanks for the people and situations in your life that you are truly grateful for.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK:

(to enjoy while tasting this wine):

“At Ransom’s waking something happened to him which perhaps never happens to a man until he is out of his own world: he saw reality, and thought it was a dream. He opened his eyes and saw a strange heraldically colored tree loaded with yellow fruits and silver leaves. Round the base of the indigo stem was coiled a small dragon covered with scales of red gold… The sky was pure, flat gold like the background of a medieval picture…The nearer waves though golden where their summits caught the light, were green on their slopes: first emerald and lower down a lustrous bottle green… The water gleamed, the sky burned with gold, but all was rich and dim, and his eyes fed upon it undazzled and unaching. The very names of green and gold… are too harsh for the tenderness, the muted iridescence, of that warm, maternal, delicately gorgeous world…. Over his head there hung… a great spherical object, almost transparent, and shining. It held an area of reflected light and at one place a suggestion of rainbow coloring… Moved by a natural impulse he put out his hand to touch it. Immediately his head, face, and shoulders were drenched with what seemed (in that warm world) an ice-cold shower bath, and his nostrils filled with a sharp, shrill exquisite scent… Such was the refreshment that he seemed to himself to have been, till now, but half awake. When he opened his eyes – which had closed involuntarily at the shock of the moisture – all the colors abut him seemed richer and the dimness of that world seemed clarified. A re-enchantment fell upon him… A man, or at least a man like Ransom, felt he ought to say grace over it and so he presently did… There was a sweetness about the mere act of living which our race finds it difficult not to associate with forbidden… actions. ”
― C.S. Lewis, Perelandra

She recovered from her laughter and sat with her legs trailing in the sea… It was difficult to believe that she had ever laughed, ever done anything but sit on the shore of her floating isle. Never had Ransom seen a face so calm, and so unearthly, despite the full humanity of every feature. He decided afterwards that the unearthly quality was due to the compete absence of that element of resignation which mixes, in however slight a degree, with all the profound stillness in terrestrial faces… Speaking slowly in that ancient language, he cried out to her, “I am a stranger, I come in peace…” The Green Lady looked quickly at him with an expression of curiosity. ‘What is ‘peace’?” she asked.”
― C.S. Lewis, Perelandra

“I thought … that I was carried in the will of Him I love, but now I see that I walk with it. I thought that the good things He sent drew me into them as the waves lift the islands; but now I see that it is I who plunge into them with my own legs and arms, as when we go swimming. I feel as if I were living in that roofless world of [Earth] where men walk undefended beneath naked heaven. It is a delight with terror in it! One’s own self to be walking from one good to another, walking beside Him as Himself may walk, not even holding hands. How has He made me so separate from Himself? How did it enter His mind to conceive such a thing? The world is so much larger than I thought. I thought we went along paths–but it seems there are no paths. The going itself is the path.”
― C.S. Lewis, Perelandra

“Where Maleldil is, there is the center. He is in every place. Not some of Him in one place and some in another, but in each place the whole Maleldil, even in the smallness beyond thought. There is no way out of the center save into the Bent Will which casts itself into the Nowhere.  Blessed be He! Each thing was made for Him…When He died in the Wounded World He died not for men, but for each man. If each man had been the only man made, He would have done no less. Each thing, from the single grain of dust to the strongest eldil, is the end and the final cause of all creation and the mirror in which the beam of His brightness comes to rest and so returns to Him. Blessed be He!”
–  C.S. Lewis, Perelandra

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost,
 here goes-
I mean… Amen.”
– C.S. Lewis, Perelandra

“When your glass gets near the end,  look for hints of gingerbread when you smell over the center of the glass!”

“This wine is also really accessible to people who are not wine afficionados.  One told me ‘This is the best wine I have ever had!'”
